3 DIY Home Renovations That Aren’t Worth It to DIY

If you love watching those home renovation shows, you likely come away from them feeling like you could even tackle some of the projects they take on. And while the idea of saving money by doing the work yourself can be very enticing, unless you have the skills and knowledge to professionally complete said projects, you could actually come out very behind in all aspects of your project. So to help you make the most of your time and money, here are three DIY home renovations that generally aren’t worth it for you to try on your own.DIY Home Renovations

Adding Square Footage Onto Your Home

For people who love their current home but could use a little more living space, one great home renovation option is to add additional square footage through an addition or other type of expansion. But unless you have experience building an entire room from scratch, taking on this big of a project could be a huge mistake. According to Suzy Strutner, a contributor to the Huffington Post, 53 percent of homeowners who’ve taken on this project regret doing it themselves. And along with this, 42 percent of homeowners went over budget as well. So to get the job done right, hire some help with additions or expansions.

Most Kitchen Renovations

If you’re looking to add value to your home for when you choose to sell it, one of the best rooms to make some updates or upgrades is the kitchen. Modern kitchens can make a home much more appealing, which can drastically increase its resale value. However, to get these projects done right, you’re probably going to want to hire a professional to complete them. Melanie Pinola, a contributor to LifeHacker.com, shares that replacing cabinets or countertops on your own can take a lot of time and money, which could make your project last a long time and leave you without a functioning kitchen for weeks or even months. So to get things done as efficiently as possible, you may want to get outside help with kitchen renovations.

Any Electrical Work

While you might think that taking on just a small project that includes a tiny amount of electrical work shouldn’t be a problem, electricity is something you should never mess with. According to Rosie Amodio, a contributor to Realtor.com, more than 400 deaths happen annually as a result of messing with faulty electrical wiring. So to keep yourself and your family safe, leave the electrical work to the professionals.

If you have some projects to get done at home and are wanting to save yourself some money by doing the work on your own, consider if this course of action will actually be the best bet for you or if you should just bite the bullet and get some help for the more complicated home renovations on your list.
