Few things are more frustrating for bloggers than producing great content that nobody reads. These five tips can help you drive more traffic to your blog.
1. Share Your Content on Social Media
Sharing your content on popular social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram keeps your current followers up to date and attracts new followers. Try to create content that is highly shareable. The more people you can get to share your content, the more likely you are to attract new social media followers and visitors to your blog. However, don’t overdo it and don’t make your social media entirely about sharing your own stuff. If you are posting too much or your sole purpose seems to be advertising, many users will quit following you. Mix up your self-promotion with other useful or entertaining information and be sure to promote complementary accounts that may promote you back.
2. Create Engaging Titles
Avoid clickbait titles. Users will quickly become annoyed and stop visiting your blog. Instead, choose titles that are both interesting and descriptive. You want your title to be creative or mysterious enough to intrigue your reader, but not so out there that the user is disappointed when they click through and don’t get the content they were expecting. Be sure to use your title tags effectively, because search engines will display them and users will often decide whether or not to click through based on the title.
3. Stick to Your Niche
It can be tempting to chase trends, but this usually won’t be a successful tactic for your blog. By the time your content gets indexed and shared enough for people to notice, the trend might be over. Additionally, users that come to your blog because you wrote about a trending topic that doesn’t match the rest of your content probably aren’t going to stick around to read the rest of your blog. Keep your blog focused on one topic. You want to make your blog the place to go to for that topic, rather than a hodgepodge of whatever everyone else is writing about.
4. Make Your Blog Visually Appealing
The content is the most important part of your blog, but presentation matters. Choose a site design that is user friendly and eye-catching. Include visual elements, such as photos, animations, and videos in your blog posts. These elements will both increase the visual appeal of your blog and help you rank better in search engines. However, don’t steal other people’s work. Either create your own, use royalty-free images, or purchase content.
5. Post More Frequently
Search engine rankings are critical for driving traffic to your blog. Google prioritizes fresh content in its rankings, which means that all else being equal, a static web page created in 2005 isn’t going to rank as well as a blog post published yesterday. A good general guideline is to post something new on your blog two to four times per week. This will keep providing Google with new content to index and help keep your readers engaged. If your blog sits idle for too long, regular readers may assume you have abandoned it and quit coming back. If you don’t have the time to post that often, you can buy blog posts to supplement your own content.
The great thing about driving traffic to your blog is that once you have established a regular readership, your efforts will tend to snowball. However, that doesn’t mean you can just set it and forget it. Keep employing these strategies to make sure you retain the new readers you have gained.
